Nothing beats the morning light at Black Coffee Roasting Company, a hangar-like cafe on a quiet street just minutes away from downtown Missoula, Montana. Things weren’t always this way. Co-owners Matt McQuilkin and Jim Chapman launched their roastery in a smaller, more remote space in 2009 but quickly found a market for its harmonious blends and bright single origins. Now housed in a former garden supply store, the welcoming environs of Black Coffee are best enjoyed while reading a book, writing the Next Great American Hot Take, or having an actual, you know, conversation. Specials rotate daily and have included discounted bags of “roaster’s choice” beans and expertly pulled $1 espresso. Also of note: cold-pressed organic juice shots and a light bites menu that swaps cloyingly sweet pastries for wholesome toast “slabs” topped with house-made nut butters, fruit compotes, and cheese.
