Tropical drinks can be found throughout Asia, but Honi Honi in Hong Kong is one of the continent’s only legit tiki bars. Bartender-in-chief Max Traverse opened the joint after doing time in high-end watering holes throughout London and France, including Trianon Palace, the Miramar Beach Hotel, and The Hoxton Pony.
At Honi Honi, the vibes are flip-flop casual but the drinks sophisticated. The Dragon’s Fire is a popular order, thanks to its flaming presentation and intense booze-to-juice ratio, but other drinks are more balanced. The rum-centric Miehana Twist is made with coconut liqueur, Clément Créole shrub, pineapple juice, mango juice, and passion fruit purée. The chili-spiked Spicy Fifty Too thrills with aged rum, coconut and vanilla syrups, lime juice, and Thai red chili. The premium rum menu is a mile long and you can always get a classic Dark & Stormy or Trader Vic’s-style Mai Tai.
As expected, big groups go bananas for the shared cocktails: The 8- to 12-person Around the World Again sees juice, bitters, and five types of liquor poured into half a globe and floated with a bottle of Champagne. To soak it all up, the food menu has cruditès, char-grilled prawn skewers, and three tempting poké bowls, including a Tahitian tuna basking in coconut milk and singe-your-face-off ghost peppers.
