Now that palate-stomping IPAs and lip-puckering sours are the craft beers du jour, Austin’s long-running Live Oak Brewing Company offers a welcome alternative: Central European styles like a spicy, Czech-schooled pilsner, cloudy and complex Hefeweizen, and dry amber lager that’d pass muster in Vienna, no problem. Fret not if you’re new to this nearly 20-year-old institution; it opened a 10-tap biergarten just minutes from downtown Austin in 2015. Food is typically served via trucks like Melted, Emoji’s, and Austin Taste Us on the weekend. While the first two stick to simple bar food like grilled cheese, ATU’s menu trades in elevated dishes like sous vide steak-and-eggs, sweetbread po’boys, lamb cheek tacos, and something called “French Onion Soup Balls,” which sounds like all of our fat-kid dreams come true.
