Perusing the drink menu at Calibre Coffee Roasters in Surabaya, Indonesia, is like taking a trip around the globe: You’ve got Vietnamese and Japanese iced coffees, flat whites, salted caramel affogatos, nonalcoholic apple coffee “mojitos,” and even strawberry-Oreo frappes, if that’s your thing. (But really, why is that your thing? Don’t let that be your thing.) For purists, the brewing options are myriad: Aeropress, French Press, V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave… If you dig what you’re drinking, buy the beans to go. The bags note how dark the roast is and rate it according to body, acidity, and fruitiness. The angelically sweet baristas can help fill in any gaps. The cafe itself is spacious and welcoming, with loads of windows and skylights and a young, personable crowd. You’ll notice a lot of tables digging into pasta dishes, but our preferred coffee accompaniment is a simple order of buttery kaya toast.
