Brunch is always the headliner at Auction Rooms, a North Melbourne cafe built on the bones of the old WB Ellis auction house. The menu is varied and eclectic, as evidenced by the ever-changing breakfast boards. A typical spread might include grilled sausage, smoked trout rillettes, avocado purée, house-made pickles, granola, rye soldiers, and a soft-boiled egg. For a sweeter start, try the banana-and-walnut loaf with espresso mascarpone or local oats porridge with chai custard, poached pears, and candied walnuts. To drink, choose from cold-pressed juices, sodas made with seasonal fruit syrups, swirly chai tea, and a damn serious pour-over menu. Beans are roasted, bagged, and brewed by sister company Small Batch Roasting Co., a favorite of Australia Brewers Cup champion Devin Loong.
