Bergsson Mathús makes the best breakfast in Reykjavík—no contest. And the menu changes every day. This hearty spread included house-baked sourdough, Serrano ham, nutty-sharp Gouda, a soft-boiled egg, insanely good hummus, raw chia seed porridge, and Greek yogurt with berry compote and homemade muesli. For a lighter meal, order the bread and cheese and make liberal use of the shop’s complimentary Icelandic butter and sweet-tart raspberry and rhubarb compotes. The sun-dappled cafe is open daily from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m., but breakfast is only served until 11 a.m. Lunch and dinner bring fortifying entrees like grilled lamb chops, oven-baked cod, and vegan shepherd’s pie. Bergsson RE, a sister restaurant overlooking a fishing boat harbor, specializes in seafood.
