The imaginative toast combos at Five Points Bakery do for downtown Buffalo what Sqirl did for Silverlake, Los Angeles—which is to say, they’ve reinvented breakfast. Pairings here range from a dark, dense, rye-heavy Volkornbrot with raclette and sauerkraut to a hearty oatmeal bread spread with farmhouse cheese and plum cherry jam. Nutella somehow works on a sourdough ciabatta, while the cinnamon raisin bread is revolutionized with sliced apple and a schmear of peanut butter. All breads are baked on-site using locally milled grains, and you can purchase whole loaves to go, fresh or frozen. The airy new space—the second in the shop’s five-year history—is as bright and welcoming as the married couple (Kevin and Melissa Gardner) who runs it. For the home cooks: Check out the small in-store grocery for bags of Gimme! Coffee, Ithaca Milk, pickled Hawthorne Valley products, Red Jacket juice, and fancy Woodstock peanut butter.
