The only thing more impressive than the food at Kindred in Davidson, North Carolina, is the interior. Those dusty rose bar stools! That glorious white tile! If you just sat here for the rest of your life, throwing back Fernet Branca slushies—a half hour outside Charlotte and next door to tiny Davidson College—you’d die happy.
Of course, it’d be a shame to kick the bucket without first trying the food. To start, get yourself an order of moan-inducing milk bread with house cultured butter. Chase this with crispy, succulent deep-fried oysters with dill yogurt and/or the blue crab salad with pickled ramps, green strawberries, and sea beans. For the main event, go for the Appalachian trout with pickled beets, kaffir lime, and chamomile, or get crazytown with any of the wildly inventive pastas (hello, ravioli stuffed with stinging nettles, fiddlehead ferns, and marcona almonds). Whatever you do, you won’t be disappointed—co-owners Joe and Katy Kindred (formerly of San Francisco’s Delfina and Quince) have made sure of it.
