Who cares if half of Plain Vanilla Bakery’s offerings take the form of a cupcake? Many Singaporeans like them—or at least like Instagramming them—and the Earl Grey/lavender variety is actually pretty tasty, as are such monthly specials as black sesame and miso caramel, toasted lemon meringue, and a very on-trend cookie made with natural charcoal and salted egg yolks. The Tiong Bahru bakeshop, just up the road from the stellar Books Actually, also sells glazed teacakes, delicate tarts, infused sugars, raw imported honey, single-origin chocolate, leather journals from Peg and Awl, and a bevy of serious cookbooks. You’ll know you’re at the right place when you spot the row of pastel bikes in front.
