Roux Carré in New Orleans’ Central City neighborhood is a food court done right. The accelerator for culinary entrepreneurs has vendors cranking out African American, Latin American, and Caribbean eats to satisfy your every craving. Hit up The Pupusa Lady for steaming-hot loroca and crawfish pupusas; Diva Dawg for all-beef awesomeness topped with chili, crawfish etouffee, nacho cheese, and/or fried chicken; and Estralita’s Express for good old-fashioned gumbo and fried shrimp po’boys. On our last visit, we opted for a heaping helping of goat curry with fried plantains, seasoned rice and beans, and steamed greens from Johnny’s Jamaican Grill. Vendor Clinton ‘Johnny’ Haughton moved from Jamaica to Atlanta about 20 years ago, then brought his best-selling jerk recipes down to New Orleans via a food truck in 2013. This is his first brick-and-mortar setup in town and NOLA couldn’t be luckier to have him.
