Cascabel Mexican Patio in San Antonio isn’t as mobbed as its flashier neighbor Rosario’s, but it’s still walkable to the Alamo/River Walk and infinitely more relaxed. Daily brunch starts with a complimentary bowl of fideo soup: thin noodles submerged in a restorative chicken broth. Where your appetite wanders after that is up to you. The machacado plate, pictured here, is a Nuevo León dish featuring dried beef, a bright mix of freshly diced jalapeños, onions, and tomatoes, and warm tortillas wrapped in colorful local textiles. But, you know, maybe you want the huaraches, or the enmoladas (chicken enchiladas in mole poblano), or the tlacoyos (three stuffed almohaditas with black beans and queso blanco). Tortas, sopes, gorditas—it’s all here and it’s all delicious. Your pants won’t thank you but your stomach sure will.
