Streets lined with vintage stores aren’t the only reason to stop by Kensington Market in Toronto. The area is also home to several artisanal food shops, including Blackbird Baking Co. and Sanagan’s Meat Locker. Opened by Peter Sanagan in 2009, the new-school butcher was so jam-packed and popular, he had to move to a larger space a few doors down in 2012. Customers now have 5,000 square feet of carnivore-friendly provisions to choose from, including beautiful charcuterie, Berkshire pork, black Angus beef, rafters of bacon, and heritage cuts of elk, venison, wild boar, and rabbit. Shelves of locally fermented mustard and fiery sauerkraut will tempt you on the way to the register, as will the sandwiches-to-go list. How’s Sunday roast beef with cheddar and mushroom gravy sound?
