For about 40 years there, Hill Street Grocer was a simple corner shop in Hobart, Tasmania, that went by the name of Rite-Way. But in 2001, the family business got a reboot, sparking a slow but steady expansion that would eventually include seven locations and a shiny new flagship. Today the reincarnated market highlights mostly local goods through its robust cheese room, in-house florist, elegant kitchenware selection, and bountiful displays of Tasmanian produce, wine, liquor, and gourmet canned goods. Lucky for you if you live there, but even if you don’t, knowledgable staff are happy to help travelers pack up a Tassie-themed picnic basket or pick out a few small-batch foodstuffs for the plane ride home. (But shhh—you know customs won’t like it.)
