You don’t need to be a knob-twiddling A.V. nerd or synth-pop star to appreciate the free tours at Moog Music’s headquarters in Asheville, North Carolina. The 45-minute visit starts and ends in the retail shop, where you can diddle around with a theremin and Minimoog (the latter of which is being retired from production due to a lack of parts). You’ll encounter rare and expensive pieces of equipment, like a $35,000 System 55 modular synthesizer. It’s limited to just 55 handmade units and follows the blueprint for a 1973 design, right down to the 36 meticulously wired modules. If Euroracks don’t get you hot and bothered, manager Paul Gaeta’s stories of espionage, vintage sci-fi sound effects, and celebrities (Beyoncé, Trent Reznor, Kanye West, and Hans Zimmer are all Moog fans) will at least keep you entertained.
