The Gamcheon Culture Village (부산 감천문화마을) in Busan, South Korea, is throbbing with tourists. And about 70 percent of them are armed with selfie sticks and think nothing of dive-bombing your panoramas of tiered pastel housing and scenic foothills. The “culture” part of Gamcheon’s name refers to a 2009 project that invited local artists and students to “decorate” the village. Today, photo ops with said artworks command half-hour waits in 50-person lines. The area is free to wander, and most of the art is identified on mounted plaques, but you can purchase a souvenir map for 2,000 won ($1.77 USD) at the tourism center. For a less chaotic experience, avoid weekends and split off down the steep and narrow laneways whenever the crowds start to overwhelm (and overwhelm they will).
