James Turrell’s Twilight Epiphany Skyspace at Rice University in Houston is no secret light installation. It’s been kicking around since 2012, accommodating up to 120 guests per sunrise and sunset sequence, six days a week. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance for the evening slot. (This is a loose crowd-control effort; nobody actually checks to see that you have a booking.) The installation inspires quiet contemplation, but just how meditative your experience will be depends on who is in attendance. Despite policies against taking photos, bringing pets, and talking, seatings may attract selfie snappers, FaceTimers, squealing children, and barking dogs. Consider yourself warned.
