Located deep in a Rapid City subdivision is one of South Dakota’s best kept secrets: Chapel in the Hills, a full-on reproduction of the famous Borgund Stave Church in Laerdal, Norway. Late preacher and radio host Dr. Harry R. Gregerson built the chapel at the bottom of the Black Hills in 1969 as a branded extension of his popular ‘Lutheran Vespers’ program. But you don’t have to subscribe to the scripture to appreciate this otherworldly architecture. The woodcarvings look as if they belong in a black-metal video or on a Game of Thrones set. There is a meditation trail out back worth the uphill walk for its saintly statues and fresh, piney air. The Chapel operates seasonally, so check hours before you go. Daily church services are suspended in winter and spring, but the grounds open periodically for self-guided tours. Admission is by donation only.
