The New Territories location of the Hong Kong Design Institute is a bit of a hike from the city’s Central Business District, but hear us out. The campus has two free exhibition spaces (HKDI Gallery and d-mart) that examine a wide range of topics, from the New Wave typography of Swiss teacher Wolfgang Weingart to Japan’s rich history of avant-garde poster art. Sometimes the works even spill onto the grounds, like a toy design competition that invited secondary schools to remix the look of Raymond Choy’s iconic Qee bear. And to think the small school—we’re talking less than 5,000 students—has only been around since 2011. That’d be the year vocational programs in Sha Tin, Kwai Chung, Kwun Tong, and Tsing Yi joined forces under one future-shocked roof. Designed by the French architecture firm Coldefy & Associés, the facade is almost as striking as the shows inside them.
