Swannanoa River Road in Asheville, NC, has a run of decent antiques shops, including Oddfellows Antiques and Nostalgique Antiques. But the one we could get lost in for hours and hours (seriously—somebody send help!) is the Antique Tobacco Barn. Housed in a 77,000-square-foot building that once hosted seasonal tobacco auctions, the Barn is home to 75 dealers. This is where you come for a colorful ombre pitcher set, vintage banana seat bike, mid-century salon chair, rickety porch rocker, working traffic signal, rusty gas lantern, mounted steer horns, rotary pay phone, or burnished copper sink. Extra lucky is the shopper with a truck for hauling home big-ticket wins like a Toledo scale, antique map cabinet, industrial-chic jeweler’s bench, or heavy iron cell from an 1890s county jail. And that’s just inside the Barn. Out back, The Old Town Salvage Company has scads of weatherbeaten doors, window frames, church glass, and clawfoot bathtubs ripe for the picking. Prices are all over the map—not outrageous, but not exactly a bargain either.
