If you’re anything like us, it takes Herculean restraint to keep your budget in check at Highgate Continental in Perth, Western Australia. The store is split between stacks of small-press books and specialty magazines and racks of rare, imported vinyl. The selection reflects the curatorial chops of the owners, who merged two pop-up shops—Good Company Records and Apropos—to form Highgate in late 2015. Good luck finding another one-stop shop down under that stocks left-field dance records (Joy Orbison, Anthony Naples, Kassem Mosse), soothing ambient sounds (Gaussian Curve, Iasos, Bing & Ruth), experimental monographs, back issues of Brownbook and Ladies of Leisure, and turntable slipmats designed to look like fat wheels of mortadella. Extra high fives to co-founder Alex Malkovic for being so generous with the local recommendations; after a short conversation, we left his shop with a list of must-visit Aussie cafes, under-the-radar craft beer bars, and secret waterfalls.
