Many art-inclined tourists make the rounds in Mumbai‘s Colaba-Fort gallery district, but far few make the schlep out to Kulture Shop in Bandra West. Their loss! Though only three years old, this is one of the most vibrant scenes for up-and-coming local artists and a great spot for picking up arty souvenirs. Once a month, the gallery/studio/shop/letterpress issues a theme (Characters & Monsters, Urban Jungle, Wit, etc.) to its roster of 40-plus rising artists (folks like Sajid Wajid Shaikh, Mira Malhotra, and Hari Panicker), and asks them to riff like crazy. The results are hung on the walls in a temporary gallery show and turned into affordable art prints, T-shirts, sketchbooks and notebooks, greeting cards, phone cases, mugs, cushions, and coasters. The three co-founders of Kulture Shop, including renown street artist Jas Charanjiva, call it #ArtOfOurTimes and say it appeals to “the generation that’s grown up with Amul ads, comic books, political cartoons, Mario Miranda, pop art, film posters, and Banksy.” That’s a vision we can get behind.
