If you can dodge the middling restaurants (basically, any place with a tout) and Instagram-crazed tourists, Haji Lane in Singapore’s Kampong Glam district is good for ticking off a few indie boutiques: XX Simplicity, Modparade, Time After Time, Mondays Off, etc. Pay extra-special attention, however, at Craft Assembly, particularly if you’re in the market for Kewpie dolls, cat clutches, sweet vintage dresses in fun eighties patterns, funky clay necklaces from Skip A Bead, raw crystal cocktail rings from [in]TRIGUE, pretty pastel Mossery notebooks, or hand-drawn Royal Tenenbaums stickers by Jukebox Prints. It’s a total twee-fest, but good for handmade gifts, particularly for the twentysomething kawaii set.
