About a half hour northwest of Hobart, Tasmania, is a speck of a town called New Norfolk (population = 5,230). Lurking within this low-key village is a potpourri of antiques stores—some wildly overpriced, others a steal. The one you don’t want to miss is The Drill Hall Emporium. The mother-and-daughters-run shop sells all manner of kitchen and home furnishings: big-ticket items like weathered Victorian dressers and 19th-century Swedish settees, as well as smaller, more transportable goods like fussy French cheese domes, horn-handled knives, heavy-duty wood chopping blocks, striped linen tea towels, and vintage copper pots with the most elegant patina.
Drill Hall’s sister shop, Flywheel, is also worth a look. It’s just around the corner on High Street and sells vintage office supplies, leather journals, heavy-duty studio scissors, calligraphy sets, ink wells, printers’ alphabets, and letterpress stationery. You might even walk away with a 1930s Underwood typewriter.
