White Wabbit Records is the raddest independent record shop in Taiwan. Located in Taipei’s Da’an district, the store stocks a mix of vinyl, CDs, ‘zines, and music-inspired artifacts. Badass lady bassist KK Yeh of the post-rock group Nipples founded the shop in 1997. Next came the White Wabbit Records label, whose first release was Peppermint’s Cool. Avant-garde rock, soul, and electronic artists from Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, and beyond followed. These days, White Wabbit is even the distributor for esteemed imprints like Erased Tapes, Captured Tracks, Sub Pop, Sacred Bones, and Numero Group.
The shop occasionally hosts live shows and many of the albums come with ringing hand-written endorsements. These won’t do you much good if you don’t read Mandarin, but at least the music is universal. To understand the shop’s impeccable and diverse taste, look no further than its Best Albums of 2016 list, which included LP picks from Swans, Eluvium, Tim Hecker, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Charles Bradley, Explosions in the Sky, ANOHNI, and Jenny Hval.
