Here’s the great thing about the year-old Boro Hotel in Long Island City, Queens: It’s affordable. Like, $111/night-plus-taxes affordable. Which makes it between, oh, $50 and $2,000 more affordable than most of its Manhattan and Brooklyn counterparts (not to mention a slew of sorrily overpriced AirBNBs).
Don’t get us wrong—the Boro isn’t perfect. Elevators run with the urgency of a three-toed sloth; we had to ask twice for the room to be cleaned, toiletries replenished, etc.; and getting into the city can be a real bitch when the MTA decides to muck around with the N line. But the amount of space you get (250+ square feet!), coupled with a glorious wall of windows, is like striking gold in this town of dark and nanoscopic hotel rooms. Our king-size bed was as soft as dryer lint, the porcelain-tiled bath immaculate, the in-room safe large enough to hold a laptop (hello, why don’t more hotels have this?), and the WiFi fast and free. The lobby is industrial-cool with its cement and cork ceilings, modish leather chairs, bookshelves lined with color-coded spines from Strand Book Store, and hood-free gas fireplace.
Outside of Birch Coffee, LIC Beer Project, and Dutch Kills, there’s not a ton to eat, see, and do in the immediate vicinity, but in decent weather, it’s only a 15- to 30-minute walk to the Museum of the Moving Image, MoMA PS1, The Astor Room, Casa Enrique, M. Wells, and Mu Ramen. Final verdict: It’s a hell of a good bet for a boutique hotel on a budget.
