For most of the year, Lumiere Tintype sets up shop in the shaded backyard of Justine’s Brasserie in Austin, TX. This is where U.K. photographer Adrian Whipp works his wet-plate collodion magic, accepting walk-in subjects every Thursday through Sunday, 6 p.m. until late.
He’s down for just about anything in the studio: Get naked, show off your tattoos, smoke a cigarette, wear a pair of antlers, bring your dog or your BFF or your significant other, or pull your beard up through your sunglasses, Cousin It-style. As Whipp likes to tell the kids he sometimes photographs, “Your own great-grandchildren will most likely end up owning the portrait we just shot. In the digital era, it seems especially important to create these tangible heirlooms.” His only caveats are that you be (relatively) sober and that if you commission a pet portrait, your pet be small enough to be held in your arms for the duration of the shoot.
A 5×7 tintype of one or two subjects is $60 and an 8×10 of one to three people or a pet is $110; email info@lumieretintype.com for a quote if you have something else in mind. His tintypes make marvelous souvenirs, but FYI—if you don’t like the portrait that results after the first 3-2-1 countdown, speak up! Don’t wait until the tintype is fully developed to decide that your left eye looks lazy. Whipp is happy to do a few takes to get it right.
