For years, Jenny and Jonathan Bonchak ran a seasonal outdoor cafe in Raleigh, NC, called Weekend. But this summer, they decided to leave it shuttered so they could focus on growing their beloved cold-brew company, Slingshot Coffee Co. What began in 2012 as an overnight operation in the kitchen of a friend’s restaurant now has a 1,000-square-foot commissary to call its own. A hundred Whole Foods stores and numerous indie outlets stock their well-designed line, which includes a potent cold-brew concentrate, a seasonal single-origin (no dilution needed), cascara tea brewed from coffee cherries, and a boxed coffee-to-go that’ll make you the belle of your office pitch meeting—at least until its eight servings run out. Locals should also look for Durham Distillery’s Damn Fine Coffee Liqueur, a Slingshot collab with traces of locally sourced molasses and orange blossom honey.
