Everyone knows El Paraiso. Not just because of its traffic-stopping blue-and-white striped roof (although that doesn’t hurt), but because it was the first paletería to open in San Antonio. José Flores founded the business in 1984. He wanted to offer a tastier, healthier, real-fruit alternative to the artificially flavored raspas that dominated S.A.’s summer dessert scene. His Mexican-style pops take their inspiration from the flavors of his home state of Zacatecas, as well as Guadalajara and Aguascalientes. FYI, the neon green pops are pickle-flavored and have bits of pickle skin floating in their frozen mix. They’re sour and tangy and definitely not for the weak of tongue. Sweeter teeth might prefer horchata, vanilla and raisin, pineapple, banana, coconut, tamarind, or strawberry flavors, while savory fiends will dig the mango con chile. Bars are 50 cents a piece, or 12 for $5.50, 18 for $8, and 25 for $11. Pick them up at the original El Paraiso location in the Deco District or from one of more than 20 paleta pushcarts roaming the city.
