There isn’t a country in the world that can touch Australia’s café culture, but damn if Stowaway Coffee + Kitchen in Denver, CO, isn’t throwing down the gauntlet anyway. Sydneysiders can keep their flat whites and precious avocado toast; here, the menu is Oz meets L.A.’s Sqirl meets the world, all mashed up and pumped through a distinctly Coloradan lens.
Their Egyptian mezze platter is heaven: insanely crunchy fava and garbanzo falafel balls with lemony tabbouleh, creamy hummus, perfectly sunny-side-up eggs dusted in za’atar, and house-baked Turkish flatbread. On the lighter side, there’s apricot and prune toast smeared with whipped salted butter, chai-spiced porridge, and an impressive chanterelle and crimini mushroom sourdough tartine with labneh, pickled red onion, and a poached egg.
To drink, you’ve got espresso, Aeropress, and batch brews from Denver heavyweight Boxcar Coffee Roasters and SF’s Four Barrel Coffee, plus a tasty hopped cold brew from the one and only Corvus Coffee. Throw in some lovely natural light, no crazy lines for breakfast and brunch, an easygoing staff, beautiful pies and pastries, and Japanese specials like tonkotsu every Friday. Stowaway, you done good.
