In its 88 years on earth, Circle Cinema in Tulsa, OK, has been everything from the movie palace where teenagers caught their first 10-cent films to an X-rated house of ill repute. Screenings are back on a more wholesome track these days, thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Circle Cinema Foundation. The nonprofit purchased the theater in 2003, ending a decade of silence and initiating a pricey restoration process that would pair its original Chicago School exterior—modeled after black-and-white photos from the National Park Service—with a new lobby, concession stand, and state-of-the-art screens. Circle is now the area’s only indie operation, specializing in Oscar-winning studio fare (La La Land, Moonlight) and special presentations like silent films on the second Saturday of every month.
