Should you ever find yourself hankering for Ethiopian in Yellowknife (hey, stranger things have happened), get thee to Zehabesha Traditional Ethiopian Restaurant. It’s a zero-frills eatery founded a couple of years ago by husband-and-wife team Dinku Tadesse and Eline Baye. He runs the front of house; she handles the cooking. And man, can she cook! The curried goat and aggressively spiced wots are tempting, but the Mahiberawi combo platter ($18.95 CAN or $15 USD) offers the best overview of everything Zehabesha excels at. The kitfo makes for an adventurous starter: raw, minced beef blended with mitmita (chili powder, cardamom, cloves, and salt) and served with Ethiopian-style cottage cheese. For vegetarians, there is the Yetsom Beyayantu sampler ($16.95 CAN or $13 USD), pictured here with a spongy, bear hug-sized round of injera. Chase it with a bottle of Alexander Keith’s Red Amber Ale from Halifax and pat yourself on the back for having eaten what is undoubtedly the best (and possibly only?) Ethiopian fare in Canada’s Northwest Territories.
