The above photo may look like it was taken inside Willy Wonka’s madcap chocolate factory, but it’s actually from the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel, one of Shanghai’s weirdest (and most popular) tourist attractions. Buy a ticket, grab a seat at the front of an automated car with 360 degree views, and spend the next three minutes on a slow-motion multimedia trip through a 2,122-foot-long psychedelic tunnel. Lights flash with abandon while a soothing voice drops nonsensical English phrases about Hades and star explosions and moon dust. The tunnel links Puxi and Pudong and offers one-way (50 yuan or $7.27 USD) and roundtrip tickets (60 yuan or $8.72). It’s touristy, sure, but also a fun/oddball way to cross the Huangpu River.
