Ask Dominic Espinosa, a.k.a. Cano, who built Cano’s Castle across the street from his home in Antonito, CO, and he’ll tell you it was God’s handiwork. A silvery exterior of hubcaps, beer cans, and scrap metal make the towering edifice stand out from its ranch-house neighbors. According to this fascinating post on Roadside America, Espinosa says God’s only begotten tenant, Jesus, stopped paying rent years ago, forcing a local water company to cut off his supply. Which partly explains why the castle looks like a semi-dilapidated piece of folk art. It’s worth a drive-by if you’re ever cruising along the Colorado-New Mexico border; Cano’s is just two hours north of Santa Fe and an hour south of Great Sand Dunes National Park. Gawking is free, but if you want Cano to join you for a chat, you’ll have to pony up a donation.
