When word spread in 2015 of Parsi Dairy Farm‘s imminent demise, some Mumbaikars nearly lost their minds. As one Parsi regular told The Times of India, “This is terrible news. Its dahi (curd) is the best in the city—thick enough to cut, rich and creamy and never sour … The paneer and sweets are also outstanding.” She forgot to mention one other thing: the delightful kesar pista kulfi, a rich form of saffron pistachio ice cream cut into fat, ready-to-eat wedges.
As it turned out, the reports of Parsi’s death were greatly exaggerated. Nariman Ardeshir founded the place 101 years ago and his descendants have kept the flame burning, despite myriad economic challenges. For travelers, it’s not the easiest dessert spot to hunt down, but it’s absolutely worth the effort. You’ll understand why when you sink your teeth into the kaju katu (cashew fudge), boondi ladoo (deep-fried, sugar-soaked almond-cardamom balls), malai (creamy-sweet paneer sandwiches), and sugary, doughy pedas. Our strategy: Eat the ice cream in the shop and take a box of treats to go.
