Outré Gallery’s roots have been planted in Melbourne for a quarter of a century now, making it one of Australia’s biggest soap boxes for lowbrow and left-field contemporary art. Founder Martin McIntosh has a keen eye for the unorthodox, promoting some work you know (the doleful vixens of Mark Ryden, the Jetsonian-fab illustrations of Shag) and more you don’t (the fantastical watercolor animals of Ozzie artist Martin Harris or the abstract Sesame Street prints of Bay Area illustrator Thom Pastrano). Rotating exhibitions highlight up-and-coming work, while the shop offers a strange brew of limited-edition posters and prints (many under $100 AUD or $76 USD), rare art books, collectible vinyl toys, and cheeky tiki mugs in Tahitian, Maori, and “Blue Lady” Tretchikoff themes.
