Myanmar hit the jackpot when it comes to dazzling Buddhist temples, but one of the most ornate is Su Taung Pyei Pagoda, perched atop Mandalay Hill in the ancient royal capital of Burma. The temple was reportedly built by King Anawratha in year 414 and has been renovated numerous times throughout the centuries. The mirrored mosaics, pastel floors, and glittering gold statutes are pure eye candy. Because the hill’s summit sits at 755 feet, this a popular spot to watch the sunset. Most pilgrims schlep up the hill on foot (there are 1,729 steps at the southern stairwell or a combination of stairs and escalators on the north side), while tourists tend to drive up via taxi or bus. The photo ops are major and the panoramic views fantastic—on a clear day, you can see as far as the Ayeyarwady River.
