Antique Sugar in Phoenix’s Roosevelt District is known for its creative Halloween costuming—specifically, assembling a from-scratch getup every day for the 31 days leading up to the big Spook. On-point getups have included Mister Rogers, Selena, Willy Wonka, Velma from Scooby-Doo, and Cruella de Vil.
But Sarah Bingham’s 2,000-square-foot shop is worth raiding the other 11 months of the year, too. For the ladies, she’s got 1970s hippie sheaths, 1960s mod minis, and 1950s party girl prom dresses with tulle for days. For guys, the floor is stacked with two-tone oxfords and threadbare logo tees. The accessories are tops, too: Our last visit turned up chunky platforms, jeweled purses, a world of skinny ties, and the sort of sparkly colorful turbans only the most outrageously confident among us can pull off. If you’re extra lucky, these well-organized racks may even turn up a covetable ’90s-kid gem, like an acid-wash denim jacket covered in hand-stitched New Kids on the Block patches. NKOTB 4 Lyfe!
