Stranger Factory in Albuquerque, New Mexico is the weird-in-a-good-way flagship of artist/toy designer Kathie Olivas and her life/Circus Posterus business partner Brandt Peters. The Nob Hill gallery carries affordable post-modern, pop surrealist, and lowbrow art, with an emphasis on original paintings, limited-edition prints, resin sculptures, oddball taxidermy, and designer toys. Look for creepy ceramic ghost babies from Flora Art Studio, moody sculptures by Simon Boses (a.k.a. Mudmonkey), and felted animal mounts from Jordan Elise’s Horrible Adorables. At $1,200, a jewel-encrusted sculpture by Olivas herself ranks among the shop’s bigger-ticket items, but you can also pick up budget-minded pieces like a miniature Circus Posterus x Tomenosuke sofubi (soft vinyl) toy for under $50. Exhibitions rotate regularly through the front and middle galleries; for a rundown of current and upcoming shows, check out Stranger Factory’s events calendar.
