You don’t have to be macrobiotic, vegan, or even vegetarian to appreciate a stay at Ji Ji No Ie Country Inn in Isumi, Japan—just a little bit country. Or, whatever, totally city but in need of a recharge.
Located deep in rural Chiba but still accessible by train from Tokyo Station, this non-traditional ryokan and its sister farm stay, Brown’s Field, are run by the Madonna of macrobiotic cuisine, natural foods cookbook author Deco Nakajima, and her husband, former photojournalist Everett Brown. The accommodations are simple (a shared bathroom with an oversized hiba wood tub and tatami mat sleeping arrangements, save for one Western-style bedroom), but the joy of being here is not to hang out in your room—it’s to wander the property, see the goats chilling in their goat house, the ducks “farming” the rice fields, and the WWOOFing interns working up a sweat in the garden and on-site cafe.
And, of course, you’re here to eat: Dinner is a meticulously plated 10-course affair, and breakfast is a dainty set. Both are local, seasonal, organic, and included in the room rate (¥16,200 or about $145 USD per person, cash only).
