You don’t have to be a mountaineer to appreciate the sturdy bespoke hiking boots for sale at Goro, but it doesn’t hurt. The shop is located about 10 minutes from Sengoku Station in sleepy northwestern Tokyo. Founder Isao Morimoto has been cutting, stitching, and assembling his heavy-duty shoes by hand since 1973. They’re available in standard and custom sizes (up to a U.S. men’s 12), with your choice of uppers, soles, and laces. Gaijin are welcome, aided along in their ordering by a friendly female staffer who speaks basic English. To get the perfect fit, she’ll take multiple measurements and trace the outline of your bare feet onto a piece of paper. Depending on the master shoemaker’s wait list, custom boots take anywhere from two to three months. A pair will set you back about $400 USD, plus another $35 for shipping, but these puppies will survive a lifetime of trekking. Or, whatever, clomping around Brooklyn pretending you trek.
