Don’t be put off by the acres of cheap trinkets and souvenir schlock at Mirota Batik & Handicraft in Surabaya. Deep in a back room on the ground floor of the multi-story souvenir emporium is the mother lode of Indonesian textiles: thousands of bolts of Javanese, Sumatran, and Balinese batiks, graphic ikats that’ll punch your eyes out with their wild colors, and hand-blocked Bagh prints among them. Prices are far below anything you’ll find in the tourist enclaves of Bali and Lombok and the selection is roughly 50 times the size. No sewing skills? Mirota also sells finished scarves, blankets, tablecloths, pillowcases, and clothing.
