Nambe Trading Post in Pojoaque, New Mexico, is located about 16 miles from Santa Fe, near the start of the scenic High Road to Taos. The shop operated for 70 years as a liaison between pueblo artisans and passing motorists, but things got really interesting when long-time neighbor Cathy Smith took it over.
Smith is the Emmy-winning costume designer behind Dances With Wolves, The Last of the Mohicans, Comanche Moon, Son of the Morning Star, and Geronimo. She grew up on a ranch in South Dakota’s Black Hills, bordering two Sioux reservations, and has dedicated her life to studying Native American art and design. Plains Indian, Sioux, Cheyenne, Blackfeet, Apache, Kiowa, Comanche, Pawnee, Navajo—she does it all, including complex beadwork and intricate porcupine quillwork. Under her watch, the Nambe Trading Post has been restored to its original glory, functioning as one part store, one part costume gallery. The space is a feast for the eyes with its mix of buckskin war shirts, fanciful feather headdresses, hand-beaded moccasins, handwoven rugs, caseloads of turquoise and coral jewelry, and gorgeous earthenware pottery. And yup—everything, including the costumes worn by Hollywood’s finest—are for sale.
